Biography

Fred Lonberg-Holm is a definitive force in the world of free jazz, free improvisation, and avant-garde music. Widely recognized as a true innovator of the cello, he has spent decades expanding the instrument’s sonic vocabulary, often playfully referring to himself as the “anti-cellist.” His distinct approach bridges the gap between intense, noise-driven textures and deep, structural lyricism. Born in Delaware, Lonberg-Holm built a strong foundation in contemporary composition under the guidance of legendary masters Anthony Braxton and Morton Feldman. After dynamic early years spent collaborating within the vibrant creative music and rock circles of New York City, he relocated to Chicago in 1995. This move placed him at the very center of the city’s fertile experimental scene, where his jagged, expressive playing style quickly became an essential element of modern improvised music.

Over the years, Lonberg-Holm has driven a staggering variety of projects both as a visionary leader and a highly sought-after collaborator. He has fronted his own acclaimed ensembles, including the genre-blurring Valentine Trio and Terminal 4, and has pioneered unconventional conduction methods with his ever-evolving Lightbox Orchestra. His collaborative resume reads like a definitive map of the global avant-garde landscape, featuring extensive work alongside standard-bearers like Peter Brötzmann, Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Tim Daisy, Paal Nilssen-Love, Jaap Blonk and Tomeka Reid. Beyond the boundaries of free jazz, his versatile sensibility as a session musician and arranger has led him to contribute to pop, rock, and alternative country recordings for trailblazing artists such as Wilco, Jim O’Rourke, and Bobby Conn. Whether delivering fierce, microtonal solo improvisations, conducting large-scale ensembles, or anchoring a rhythm section, Lonberg-Holm continues to push the boundaries of what a stringed instrument can achieve, making his massive catalog an essential destination for serious experimental listeners, independent musicians, and jazz fans alike.
