Philosophy

Aerophonic Records was founded in late 2013 by Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis as a direct response to the structural collapse of traditional jazz labels and the exploitative economics of streaming platforms. The premise is disarmingly simple: 100% artist control, from production and mastering to distribution and promotion. No A&R gatekeepers, no corporate split, no compromise.

Aerophonic deliberately refuses distribution on Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon. If you want the music, you buy it directly — through Bandcamp, the label’s own site, or independent stores like Downtown Music Gallery. This isn’t a marketing stance; it’s a political and economic position that places the musician at the center of every transaction. Aerophonic is part of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, a global network of artist-run labels committed to the same principle: sustainability without institutional compromise.

Aesthetic

Aerophonic releases share a consistent visual language: stark, minimalist design that refuses ornamentation. Cover art leans toward abstract photography, bold typography, and high-contrast monochrome — a visual equivalent of the music’s refusal to soften its edges. Every physical release is treated as an artifact, not a product. The packaging is functional and precise, designed to survive decades in a record collection without looking dated.

This aesthetic discipline mirrors the label’s philosophy: nothing superfluous, everything intentional. Aerophonic looks like what it sounds like — direct, unmediated, and completely committed to the work.

Emblematic Catalog

The discography centers on Dave Rempis‘s most active ensembles. Ballister — with Fred Lonberg-Holm and Paal Nilssen-Love — delivers abrasive, high-energy free jazz with a sharp political edge. The Rempis Percussion Quartet documents his long-running exploration of dense rhythmic architecture. KUZU, the power trio with Tashi Dorji and Tyler Damon, fuses free improvisation with the intensity of noise rock and black metal.

Key releases include Chrysopoeia (Ballister), Harvesters (Rempis Percussion Quartet), Hiljaisuus (KUZU), and Orbital by The Outskirts — each a document of collaborative improvisation captured without post-production embellishment. Collaborations extend to Nate WooleyTomeka Reid, Joshua Abrams, Elisabeth Harnik, and Mats Gustafsson.
