Biography
Andy Moor is an English electric guitarist whose boundary-pushing career spans over four decades of sonic exploration and uncompromising collaboration. Born in London and currently based in Amsterdam, Moor’s distinctively raw, angular, and rhythmically unpredictable style has made him a vital pillar in the international avant-garde, experimental jazz, and post-punk communities. He first began his professional musical journey in Edinburgh, Scotland, playing with the eclectic post-punk group Dog Faced Hermans. The band seamlessly mixed fiery independent rock energy with traditional folk melodies and open-ended improvisation, laying down the foundation for Moor’s future sonic experiments.
In 1990, an open invitation prompted Moor to move to the Netherlands and join the iconic Dutch anarcho-punk collective, The Ex. Over the decades, his role in the group has been instrumental in expanding their stylistic landscape from straightforward political punk into a highly adaptive vehicle for free-form improvisation and cross-cultural dialogue. His work with The Ex has seen revered collaborations with pioneering Ethiopian musicians, legendary free-jazz players, and modern classical composers, demonstrating a rare ability to bridge contrasting sonic universes. In 1995, he co-founded Kletka Red alongside Tony Buck, Joe Williamson, and Leonid Soybelman, blending traditional klezmer, Greek, and Russian melodies into an explosive, rhythmically complex fusion.
Driven by a deep commitment to independent artistic curation, Moor co-founded the Amsterdam-based record label Unsounds in 2001 alongside composer Yannis Kyriakides and designer Isabelle Vigier. The imprint functions as a dedicated platform for electroacoustic music, sound poetry, and contemporary composition. Moor’s extensive catalog features numerous collaborative duos, including acclaimed releases with Cypriot composer Yannis Kyriakides focusing on urban Greek rebetika songs, French sound poet Anne James Chaton, and free-jazz saxophonist John Butcher. As an active member of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, Moor continues to release and distribute challenging, physical works that captivate independent musicians, crate-diggers, and fans of adventurous music worldwide.
