Biography

Sylvie Courvoisier is a Swiss-born pianist and composer based in New York whose career has established her as one of the most distinctive and accomplished voices in contemporary jazz and improvised music. Born in Lausanne and trained in classical piano before discovering improvisation, Courvoisier brings a compositional depth and technical mastery to her work that is immediately apparent — she is a musician for whom the distinction between composed and improvised music is not a boundary to be defended but a creative resource to be exploited.

Her piano playing encompasses an extraordinary range: from the lyrical melodic intelligence of her composed works to the abrasive extended technique of her most experimental improvisations, with the full spectrum of possibilities in between. She uses the interior of the piano — strings, soundboard, frame — as readily as the keyboard, treating the instrument as a complete sonic environment rather than a note-producing mechanism. This approach connects her to the tradition of prepared piano while extending it in ways that are entirely personal.

Courvoisier has been a central figure in the New York downtown experimental music scene since relocating from Europe in the 1990s, building collaborative relationships with musicians including Mark Feldman, Ikue Mori, and a wide range of figures from both the American jazz tradition and the European avant-garde. Her ensembles — from solo piano to quartet and larger formations — document a musician whose compositional ambition grows with each project.

Her recording catalog spans solo piano works, duo recordings with longtime collaborator Mark Feldman, and ensemble projects that extend her compositional vision into more complex collective contexts. Each release demonstrates a musician who approaches the studio as a composer as much as a performer — carefully constructing the context for improvisation rather than simply documenting what happens when musicians play together.

As a member of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, Courvoisier brings a European compositional tradition and a New York downtown aesthetic into a network primarily shaped by Chicago free jazz and Scandinavian improvisation. Her presence enriches the cooperative’s musical breadth and reflects the genuinely international scope that the network has built.
