Biography
Chris Corsano is an American drummer and improviser who has been redefining the boundaries of percussion since the late 1990s. Operating at the vibrant intersection of free jazz, collective improvisation, avant-rock, and noise music, he has established himself as one of the most inventive and physical forces in contemporary avant-garde music. Based out of New York, Corsano is highly regarded for his ability to seamlessly blend the raw, uncompromising energy of hardcore punk with the deep structural sophistication of avant-garde jazz, making him a central figure for independent musicians and experimental music lovers worldwide.
His musical journey took a definitive shape in 1998 through an enduring partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty. Together, they developed a high-velocity, ecstatic sonic language tongue-in-cheek labeled as “The Hated Music.” In 2005, a move to the United Kingdom sparked a significant expansion of his artistic vision, leading him to focus heavily on his solo work. As a solo performer, Corsano transforms the traditional drum kit into a spontaneous orchestra-of-one. He achieves this by integrating self-made, non-percussive instruments and extended techniques, such as stretching bowed violin strings across his drum heads, utilizing contact microphones, and modifying reed instruments to pull unexpected textures from his kit.
Beyond his solo endeavors, Corsano is a highly sought-after collaborator who moves effortlessly between underground circuits and major global stages. His versatile style led him to spend 2007 and 2008 touring as the main drummer for pop-icon Björk during her Volta world tour. His extensive discography includes landmark collaborative records and live performances alongside free jazz legends and experimental pioneers like Evan Parker, Joe McPhee, Bill Orcutt, Okkyung Lee, Jim O’Rourke, and Thurston Moore. He is also a vital member of the acclaimed psychedelic rock trio Rangda and the duo Vampire Belt.
As an active member of the Catalytic Sound community, Chris Corsano continues to champion an uncompromising, DIY approach to creative music. With an impressive catalog spanning over 150 recordings and thousands of live shows across the globe, his work is a testament to the power of real-time improvisation. Whether you are looking to discover his latest vinyl releases, stream his solo sets, or explore his historical collaborations, Corsano remains an essential listen for anyone dedicated to the past, present, and future of boundary-pushing music.
