Biography

Ikue Mori is a transformative figure in contemporary avant-garde and experimental music, whose career spans nearly five decades of restless sonic exploration. Born and raised in Tokyo, Mori relocated to New York City in 1977, arriving just as the aggressive, raw energy of the downtown music scene was fracturing into new forms. Despite having no formal training, she instinctively picked up the drums and co-founded the seminal No Wave band DNA alongside Arto Lindsay and Tim Wright. Her completely self-invented, fiercely asymmetrical approach to rhythm quickly became a defining hallmark of the movement, earning her a legendary cult status and permanently shifting the boundaries of underground rock.

Following the dissolution of DNA in the early 1980s, Mori underwent a radical artistic pivot that would reshape the landscape of electronic improvisation. Abandoning the traditional drum kit, she integrated a Roland TR-606 drum machine into her toolkit—a highly unconventional choice within the highly acoustic, spontaneous context of New York’s downtown free-jazz and improvised music communities. Rather than using the device to loop static background beats, Mori sought to make the machine “sound broken.” She programmed complex patterns in real time, developing a hyper-sensitive, tactile signature style that treated programmable technology as an unpredictable, responsive dialogue partner. By the turn of the millennium, she expanded her sonic palette further by adopting the laptop computer, seamlessly blending fractured electronic noise, shifting micro-rhythms, and evocative melodies with her own live visual projections.

Mori’s elastic virtuosity has made her one of the most prolific and respected collaborators in the international creative music landscape. She has maintained enduring creative partnerships with avant-garde icons like John Zorn—performing in ensembles such as Electric Masada and Hemophiliac, and frequently designing album covers for his Tzadik Records imprint—as well as guitarist Fred Frith and harpist Zeena Parkins, the latter with whom she forms the acclaimed duo Phantom Orchard. Her work effortlessly bridges the gap between structured composition and pure sonic abstraction, a quality that led to her being named a prestigious MacArthur Fellow in 2022.

As a crucial member of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, Mori provides a vital historical bridge for younger generations of independent musicians, proving that electronic music can be as deeply human, spontaneous, and fiercely uncompromising as any physical instrument.
