Biography

Chris Corsano is one of the most sought-after drummers in contemporary free jazz and experimental music — a musician whose combination of extraordinary technical facility, relentless physical energy, and acute musical intelligence has made him a first-call collaborator for musicians across the full spectrum of improvised music. Over three decades of active performance, Corsano has built a discography of breathtaking scope, recording and performing with musicians from the American free jazz tradition, the European avant-garde, British experimental rock, and the global improvisation community.

His drumming defies the conventional categories available to describe it. He plays with the intensity of the most extreme noise drummers and the structural sophistication of the finest jazz percussionists — simultaneously. His technique encompasses the full range of contemporary extended percussion practice while remaining grounded in the physical directness that comes from a musician who has spent decades playing in rooms where the music has to work in real time, without the safety net of overdubs or post-production.

Corsano’s collaborative range is staggering. He has recorded with Mick Flower, Paul Flaherty, Evan Parker, and Bill Orcutt on one end of the spectrum, and with Nate WooleyDave Rempis, and Joe McPhee in the context of the Catalytic Sound cooperative. His duo with Dave Rempis, documented on Aerophonic Records, captures two musicians whose energies complement each other with remarkable precision — Corsano’s propulsive intensity perfectly matched by Rempis’s melodic urgency.

What distinguishes Corsano from many musicians of comparable technical ability is his listening. In any context, he responds to what is happening in the room — adjusting, building, receding, exploding — with an attentiveness that makes every performance feel fully present and fully alive. He is not a musician who brings a fixed approach to every session; he brings himself, and himself is extraordinary.

His ongoing presence in the Catalytic Sound cooperative connects him to a global network of musicians who share his commitment to music made on its own terms, distributed directly, and played without compromise.
