🚨 BAND SPOTLIGHT 🚨 — TRIO X was a seminal American free jazz ensemble formed in 1998 by the visionary multi-instrumentalist and composer Joe McPhee. The group’s classic and enduring lineup featured Dominic Duval on double bass and @jay.rosen.39 on drums.

More than a traditional leader-sidemen format, TRIO X was a deeply collaborative unit renowned for its profound empathy, spontaneous composition, and expansive sonic palette. Their music was a unique synthesis of raw energy and delicate lyricism, weaving together threads of free improvisation, blues, ballads, and deconstructed standards into a cohesive, emotional language.

They were celebrated for their intense live performances and an extensive discography, primarily on the CIMP and Cadence Jazz Records labels. TRIO X stood as a pinnacle of creative music in the late 1990s and 2000s, demonstrating that free jazz could be both fiercely exploratory and achingly beautiful, built on a foundation of immense trust and shared history. Their work remains a testament to the power of long-term musical conversation.

✔️ "SCALE, addresses issues of observation, embodied transferences, telepathy and duration employing swipes, knocks, resonators and hypnotic patternings on the acoustic harp with the less controllable sounds of radio waves, homemade synths and feedback.
Inspired by the timings and sensations of natural phenomena including daylight’s slow emergence at dawn and the pulsing ambiance of ocean currents. Nature as both utopic and disruptive. Attention is situated in an often luscious, contemplative sonic environment that shifts at varying rates from the imperceptible to sudden unexpected bursts."

"Mats plays a plastic alto sax. A classic Grafton sax. The type of sax that was used by Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and Bengt Nordström. Nordström is best known having produced Albert Ayler´s first recording Something Different!!!!!! on his Bird Note imprint. It is in his own role as a sax player Bengt was truly inventive. Bengt was playing solo sax improvisation already in 1962 (!!!) Nordström mentored Swedish reedman Mats Gustafsson in addition to playing in a quartet with drummer Peter Uuskyla, bassist Bjorn Ålke, and violinist Lars Svantesson. Nordström died in 2000 at age 63. Bengt is a celebration of the music and the man behind it."

"On this record you might not hear the Gustafsson you are used to, but this is the real Mats. This is the nucleus in his playing. These solo pieces are a wholeness, together forming a sounding essay about his music."

✔️ “Otoliths” is the second album by the transatlantic quartet Earscratcher, which brings together Austrian pianist Elisabeth Harnik with three of her US-based cohorts – Dave Rempis on saxophones, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, and Tim Daisy on drums. Recorded live on tour in the US in December of 2024 - no small feat in an era when the longstanding xenophobic and insular tendencies of the country dominate more than ever - this sophomore outing finds a band whose roots have spread deep and wide. While their self-titled debut from 2023 drew from the spiraling ribbons of energy associated with Cecil Taylor’s bands with Jimmy Lyons, this more recent document showcases a band whose tannins have softened into ruby hues, ripe with the earthy tones of tobacco and leather that implies.

✔️ “House and the Home” is the long overdue reunion of the collaborative trio Wheelhouse, whose work had a significant impact on both the Chicago scene and the artistic identities of its members back in the aughts and early teens.

“(...) is a return to a deeply shared artistic communion. In a time when so many of us are circling our proverbial horses against what an uncertain future holds, rediscovering such a profound communal understanding feels more crucial than ever.”
