Description

Each chapbook comes with a card to download and stream the video of Hennies’ piece as performed by Wooley. There is no audio only release of Monologue.

Commissioned by trumpeter Nate Wooley to close his For/With Festival in 2019, Hennies’ piece is a performative tour de force that combines an almost ritualistic dramaturgy with a complete exploration of all the ways a trumpet can make sound. Due to the visual nature of the piece, it will only be released in video form with audio and video beautifully captured by Ryan Streber at Oktaven Sound.

Monologue will be released as a limited edition chapbook designed by Lasse Marhaug and featuring writings by Hennies and Wooley, along with a reproduction of Hennies’ score, a conversation between trumpeter and composer, and full color reproductions of Mara Baldwin’s paintings that are inspired from textile and quilt practices.

For this solo trumpet piece, Hennies’ first, the composer views the instrument in turns as a wind tunnel, a siren, and a site for percussion. Throughout the performance, Wooley solemnly disassembles the trumpet, balancing its pieces in his lap as slides become drumsticks and whistles and valves become death rattles. The horn is turned upside down as Hennies’ piece defies its performer to achieve a perfect, or even reproducible, performance of the piece. Monologue, as interpreted by Wooley, is a meditation on loneliness, quiet, and failure, making it a beautiful companion piece to the trumpet player’s own composition, Henry House, which was released earlier this year on Ideologic Organ.

Monologue is the third release in Tisser Tissu’s series of solo works for trumpet (TTE002: stem-root-flower by Michael Pisaro-Liu and TTE003: For Trumpet Player by Christian Wolff) and joins other recordings of works commissioned by Wooley for his For/With commissioning series, such as Annea Lockwood’s Becoming Air (2020 Black Truffle) and chanting ballads composed by Eva-Maria Houben (2025 Editions Wandelweiser).
