Philosophy

Unsounds was co-founded in 2001 by guitarist Andy Moor — a veteran of The Ex and one of the most distinctive voices in the European improvised music scene. Unlike labels organized around a single artist’s output, Unsounds functions as a genuine curatorial imprint: it releases work by a diverse range of artists from across Europe and beyond, united by a shared commitment to sonic rigor and formal ambition.

The label operates in the space where free improvisation, electroacoustic music, and contemporary composition converge — a space that has no conventional name and that commercial music infrastructure has little interest in. Unsounds exists precisely because that space needs documentation. As a member of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, Unsounds connects the Amsterdam experimental scene to Chicago, Oslo, New York, and the broader international network of artist-run labels.

Aesthetic

Unsounds releases are notable for their visual and conceptual sophistication. Covers are designed with the care of art publications: each release is a complete cultural object, with artwork, liner notes, and packaging that treats the recording as something to be lived with, not merely consumed. The aesthetic draws on the tradition of European experimental music publishing — think ECM or Hat Hut, but with a distinctly Dutch directness that avoids preciousness.

This commitment to the artifact matters extends throughout the label’s history: Unsounds releases are consistently among the best-designed in the independent experimental music world, which reflects Moor’s understanding that the presentation of music is itself a form of advocacy for the music’s value.

Emblematic Catalog

The Unsounds catalog is defined by its range: from Andy Moor‘s angular guitar work in duo and solo contexts to electroacoustic compositions by artists including Ikue MoriChristof Kurzmann, and Zeena Parkins. Each release is chosen for its contribution to the label’s ongoing investigation of music at the edge of category.

Key releases include Moor’s duo recordings with The Ex collaborators, solo guitar documents, and collaborative recordings that place his voice in conversation with some of the most adventurous electroacoustic and improvised music practitioners working in Europe today. The label’s extensive back catalog — nearly 25 years of releases — makes Unsounds one of the most substantial archives in the field.
