Biography

Ig Henneman is a Dutch violist and composer whose four decades of activity in free improvisation have produced a body of work that stands as one of the most sustained and fully realized in European experimental music. Based in Amsterdam, Henneman came of age in the Dutch improvised music scene of the early 1980s, developing an approach to the viola that draws on the instrument’s unique position — neither violin nor cello, existing in a middle register with a distinctive warmth and gravity — while developing a genuinely personal voice within the free improvisation tradition.

Her viola playing is characterized by an extraordinary economy and precision: she plays exactly what needs to be played, nothing more, nothing less. In an improvised music context often associated with gesture and intensity, Henneman’s restraint is itself a form of expressive power — the sustained note, the carefully chosen interval, the silence that frames a phrase all carry as much weight as any more overtly dramatic gesture.

Her most sustained musical relationship has been with saxophonist Ab Baars, with whom she co-founded Wig Records in 1988 and has performed and recorded as a duo for over four decades. The Baars-Henneman duo is one of the great extended musical conversations of European improvisation — a relationship so deep and mutually attuned that the distinction between their individual voices becomes, in the best moments, genuinely difficult to maintain. The duo’s final recording, 150 @ Wels Unlimited 2025, released as Wig Records closed after 35 years and 35 titles, is described by critics as one of the most emotionally and musically complete documents in the label’s catalog.

Beyond the duo, Henneman has led her own ensembles and collaborated with a wide range of European improvisers, contributing her compositional sensibility to contexts from solo performance to larger ensemble work. Her compositions for improvising musicians share the qualities of her playing: structurally clear, harmonically adventurous, and built on a deep trust in the collaborative intelligence of the musicians who perform them.

As a member of the Catalytic Sound cooperative, Henneman’s presence represents the depth of the European free improvisation tradition that the cooperative’s international network encompasses — a musician whose career has spanned four decades and whose artistic commitments have remained entirely consistent throughout.
