Biography
claire rousay is a percussionist, electronics artist, and composer who has emerged as one of the most celebrated and genuinely distinctive voices in contemporary experimental music. Her work occupies a singular space: simultaneously drawing from free improvisation, ambient music, noise, and a kind of intimate documentary realism in which the sounds of everyday life — conversation, environmental noise, the texture of personal experience — become the raw material for music that is at once formally sophisticated and emotionally direct.
Rousay’s percussion practice is unlike most of what goes under that name in experimental music: she works with small, carefully chosen sounds, contact microphones, and a sensitivity to quiet that makes her performances feel almost like field recordings of interior states. The drums are present but they are not a rhythm engine — they are resonating objects, textures, interruptions of silence rather than its organization.
Her electronics work extends this approach into the domain of composition: she builds recordings and installations that layer voice, environmental sound, and processed audio into works that have the emotional weight of personal narrative without the literal content of autobiography. Several of her releases — including a softer focus and everything perfect is already here — have been received as defining documents of a particular approach to experimental music that prioritizes vulnerability and presence over formal display.
Rousay collaborates extensively across experimental music communities, with connections to musicians including Kim Alpert, Christof Kurzmann, and gabby fluke-mogul, among many others. Her curatorial and organizing work in the experimental music community is as significant as her performance practice — she actively creates space for music that mainstream and even experimental institutional structures frequently overlook.
Her membership in the Catalytic Sound cooperative reflects the cooperative’s commitment to expanding beyond its free jazz origins to include the full range of contemporary experimental music practice. Rousay represents a generation of musicians who are fundamentally redefining what improvised and experimental music can be.
