“Nilssen-Love knows how to employ Ex great skills as a rhythm guitarist, his role in The Ex. Ex is a rhythm guitarist with highly imaginative concept of rhythm and time like no one else, but nevertheless, one that thrive on a hard, massive pulse, exactly the kind that Nilssen-Love keeps feeding him. Ex does not surrender easily to Nilssen-Love rhythmic attacks. He tries to suggest abstract, minimalist soundscapes, counter the pulse with loose strategy of tension building, color it with weird noises or suddenly steer it to other directions. But, finally, he interlocks with Nilssen-Love powerful blows. Then the two are simply irresistible. Formed in the mid-1990s, the trio consists of three titans of the Chicago avant-garde scene: the relentlessly inventive saxophonist/clarinetist & composer @ken_vandermark , the foundational and versatile bassist Kent Kessler, and the legendary, dynamically expressive drummer Hamid Drake.

Their music is a masterclass in collective improvisation, seamlessly blending structured themes with explosive, high-energy freedom. Over decades, they have built a vast discography that showcases their profound musical communication, moving with telepathic understanding from ferocious, driving rhythms to moments of subtle, lyrical beauty. The DKV Trio is not just a band but an institution, representing the very heart of collaborative and exploratory jazz, including collaborations with Joe McPhee, @joemorrismusic , The Thing, AALY Trio & Fred Anderson.

So, although we may be walking through four feet of shit again in 2026, The Outskirts have arrived to provide the soundtrack one more time and to gift us a little warmth where there was none before.”

“Orbital is far from reactive or sentimental, however. The trio takes these songs and makes something new and strange out of them. See, for example, the 8:25 mark of “Strafe,” when Dave and Frank explore improvised atmospheric sounds, more searching than swinging. But Ingo, Rosaly, and Rempis honestly sound like they are having a blast on this record and, given a thematic basis for mood and timbre, the group launches ahead, driving, laughing, and transforming these old tunes.”

The music, as Brötzmann described it, has a definite contemplative and reflexive approach and is less aggressive, but the titles of the eight pieces are typical ones of Brötzmann.”
