Description

Science Fair is a Trondheim-based jazz quintet led by pianist and composer Anna Ueland, the band explores the accidental and the fragmented, the melodic and the chaotic. The rhythm section features Gustav Tornberg on drums and Kertu Aer on double bass, while Guro Kvåle on trombone and Åsne Fossmark on tenor saxophone bring the band’s bold, charismatic themes to life.

Rooted in interplay, playfulness, freedom, and energy, Science Fair draws inspiration from the American free jazz of the 1960s, contemporary Scandinavian jazz, and classical Impressionism. The album consists of nine tracks, eight of which are composed by Ueland. It opens with a reinterpretation of Mort Garson’s cult classic Plantasia, one of Ueland’s greatest musical inspirations.

Sugar in the Morning seeks to capture the childlike joy of launching yourself down a hill that’s just a little too steep on a brand-new pair of cross-country skis—going just a bit faster than you’re comfortable with. It evokes that moment when a sharp turn suddenly appears, and you realize that all you can do is trust that the ski tracks are deep enough, and that both your skis and your knees will withstand the G-forces. Science Fair explores this delicate balance between risk and control, between composed material and improvisation.
