Description

“Spirits Moving is the sophomore album of Portuguese, Lisbon-based trumpeter-composer Luís Vicente’s international 4tet, featuring American tenor sax player John Dikeman, a frequent collaborator of Vicente, and double bass player Luke Stewart (of Irreversible Entanglements), and Dutch drummer Onno Govaert, another frequent collaborator of Vicente. The album was recorded live, like the 4tet’s debut album, House in the Valley (Clean Deed, 2023), and at the same location, Igreja do Espírito Santo in Caldas da Rainha in March 2023.

Vicente 4tet music corresponds with the hyperactive and spiritual Afro-American free jazz of the late sixties and early seventies, enriched by European schools of free improvisation. Vicente composed the four pieces, and all are open to extended improvisations and enjoy the distinct voices of the 4tet. Vicente and Dikeman have uncompromising, eruptive sonic palettes, but they also enjoy articulating singable themes, relying on their already established profound, immediate, and almost telepathic interplay. Stewart and Govaert dictate a hypnotic, propulsive yet quite free pulse.

Spirits Moving highlights the role of free music as an uplifting, thought-provoking art. The music follows groundbreaking improvisers and composers (listen to the last piece, the cathartic «Ornette Surrounds») but has its fresh edge and its own identity and sound. It is the music of «Here and There», as the third, 20-minute piece is titled. It refuses to accept the world as it is, and just like Vicente’s recent album with another quartet – Dikeman, William Parker, and Hamid Drake – was aptly titled No Kings! (JACC, 2025), this album asks «Why No is No?», as the title of the second piece. Say yes to this great album.”
